According to the Radeon HD 7000 generation, depending on the model in Battlefield 3 about 15 to 20 percent compared with the Catalyst 12.8 set on performance. Less than ten but more than five per cent faster to run beyond Borderlands 2, Dirt Showdown, Skyrim, Sleeping Dogs, Sniper Elite V2, StarCraft 2, Civilization V, and the Heaven benchmark. The values apply here primarily for Graphics Core Next-generation, while older graphics cards such as the Radeon HD 6000 series should increase only in rare cases. In addition, the software is not optimized for use with Windows 8.
Since then, the 3D graphics card market is fierce competition between AMD and Nvidia prevails, it is not done with the development of the graphics card and the excellent programming of the driver. Meanwhile, the manufacturer for a long time on a regular basis to develop new driver for a graphics chip and maintain. Sometimes it is even necessary to adapt the driver for a single game, so the game at best, a little faster, but sometimes in the first run. Reason enough for us, the new driver on a Radeon HD 7970 Edition GHz undergo a regular test. Doubly interesting in this respect: As the graphics card with the new Graphics Core Next architecture is because we expect over time larger velocity jumps than usual.
The latest driver from AMD's Catalyst 12.11 beta. In our test are for comparative purposes also the Catalyst driver 12.3, 12.7 and 12.9 represented.
AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta
Catalyst 12.11, code name "Never Settle", comes from AMD's beta program and is therefore not equipped with a WHQL. So it is quite possible that even larger bugs in the software are available - we are during our tests but not experienced any difficulties.
The driver finished 12th loud INF file on Completed in October, which is about a half weeks old. Catalyst 12.11, which bears the internal version 9.01.8-121012a supports all Radeon graphics cards from the Radeon HD 5000 series - ie all DirectX 11 graphics cards. From the Radeon HD 6000-series will also corresponding entries for mobile graphics cards are available.
Unfortunately, AMD has issued so far no release notes for the driver, so that more detailed information about the changes have not been officially announced. Apparently it's at the Catalyst 12.11 beta but primarily a performance driver, because AMD has made many improvements to the performance promised.
Other changes AMD has not specified when the Catalyst 12.11. In the course of the day the driver should be available for download - and then of course in our download archive.
Performance Rating
We were amazed when we saw the results of the Catalyst 12.11 beta. For while even a "good" driver update improves performance on average, perhaps by one, more than two percent, the Catalyst 12.11 is clearly superior to the Catalyst 12.9.
So we can on a Radeon HD 7970 Edition GHz under 1920x1080 with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering attest to the Catalyst 12.11 on average, higher by five percent performance! With four times more anti-aliasing and texture filtering 16-fold, it is still a good four percent.
Almost makes a huge leap like Battlefield 3, depending on quality choice by a whopping 36 (no AA) or 25 runs (AA) percent faster than the fastest to date drivers. In addition, Project Cars can with a set of twelve (excluding AA) to eleven percentage significantly (AA) for better performance, the same goes for Dirt Showdown with seven (without AA) and six percent (AA). Dips are not the Catalyst 12.11.
Conclusion
We must admit that we have often fallen a driver as good as the beta version of the Catalyst 12.11 - maybe even never. While there are no new features, but the increased speed is impressive. Four to five percent more power on a Radeon HD 7000 card in 1920x1080 for a pure driver update is remarkable.
Especially Battlefield 3 shows the Catalyst 12.11 a proper power explosion and provides part of more than 30 percent additional frames per second than the previous driver. That this increase in power does not come at the expense of image quality, we have also examined - in terms of image quality, there are no differences between the drivers.
Problems we encountered with the Catalyst 12.11 does not, the driver is able to complete all the tests properly. Accordingly, we encourage anyone with an owner Graphics Core Next-only graphics card, install the Catalyst to 12.11 despite the beta stage.
